wheels” was formulated. It was approved by the General Directorate of Railway
Economy of Ukrzaliznytsia. The developed standards are the basis for the creation
of Specifications for high-strength railway wheels of a new generation.
3. Based on the study of the patterns of change in the resource
characteristics of wheel steels, it is recommended complex alloyed steel with solid-
4
solution (~ 1% Si and ~ 1% Mn) and precipitation ([V‧N]‧10 = 20…25%)
hardening at reduced carbon content (0.52… 0.53%) for pilot testing in order to
manufacture railway wheels of a new generation.
4. The recommendations for increasing fatigue crack growth resistance
of the heat affected zone of repair tread surface of railway wheels are substantiated
and included in the technical regulation of repair of railway wheels, developed in
the E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine.
5. The obtained research results are implemented in the educational
process of preparing bachelors and masters in the areas of 132 “Materials Science”
and 136 “Metallurgy” in the Department of Applied Materials Science and
Materials Engineering at Lviv Polytechnic National University.
Keywords: high-strength railway wheel steels, defects of the tread surface,
fatigue crack growth resistance, solid-solution and precipitation hardening,
operational reliability, repair of the tread surface.
